IPL 2020: Virender Sehwag Comes Out In Support Of Virat Kohli

On Friday, the journey of Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore ended after they lost the IPL eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad to be knocked out of the ongoing edition of the IPL. However, what was more heartbreaking was the fact that the Men in Red lost the game after a positive start to the season.

Following the exit of RCB from the IPL, many cricketers, experts and pundits came out, criticizing Virat Kohli’s performance as the skipper, including the former Indian cricketer and World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir. Recently, in an interview, Gambhir reckoned that it’s high time that RCB moves on and hand-over the captaincy to someone else.

However, Gambhir’s long-time Delhi and India teammate — Virender Sehwag doesn’t agree with him. While Gambhir feels that there’s a problem in captaincy for RCB, on the other hand, Sehwag feels that changing the captain won’t change things for RCB.

Virender Sehwag feels the team’s woes won’t change as long as the management doesn’t look to bring more quality players in the team. He also backed Virat by expressing how his captaincy works for Team India. Talking to Cricbuzz, he said:

A captain is only as good as his team. When Virat Kohli captains India, he is able to deliver the results. He wins matches – ODIs, T20Is Tests. But when he captains RCB, his team is not able to perform,”

He added:

“It is very important for the captain to have a good team. So, I believe the management should not try and think of changing their captain and rather think of how they can improve this team. Who all should be added to the team to make sure their performance improves?”

Furthermore, Sehwag feels how the batting order of RCB has always been about Virat and AB de Villiers. Sehwag reckons what RCB needs in order to have a settled batting unit with some fresh talents coming to the force this season. He said:

“Every team has a settled batting order but RCB have never had that. It’s only ABD and Virat, who keep shuffling up and down the order,” Sehwag added. “With Padikkal coming to the fore, I reckon RCB need to have one more opener and a good lower-order batsman. These five batsmen should be enough to win them matches. The same way, they’d have to trust their Indian fast bowlers. Everyone gets taken to the cleaners. It’s not as if Rabada, Morris and others haven’t been taken for runs.”
