The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just around the corner and the excitement for the mega-tournament has been increasing with every passing day. Ahead of the upcoming season, the BCCI has made a major change to the names of the individual awards – Purple Cap and Orange Cap, which are given to the players.

Well, for the unversed, ever since the inception of the league, the organizers have presented the Orange Cap to the player with the highest number of runs in a season, on the other hand, the purple cap is presented to the player who takes the highest number of wickets.

From Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle, to Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, among others have won these individual awards over the years.

Till now these individual awards were called Purple Cap and the Orange Cap, but from IPL 2022 onwards, these awards will be renamed Aramco Orange Cap and Aramco Purple Cap.

According to a report by the Times of India, the BCCI has roped in Saudi Aramco as one of their sponsors for the upcoming season. Aramco will reportedly pay INR 65 crore per year to sponsor the two individual awards.

All the eyes will be on the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, KL Rahul, who has aggregated heaps of runs in the previous two IPL seasons. While he won the Orange Cap in IPL 2020, he missed out in the last year’s tournament by a close margin. In IPL 2021. the Orange Cap was won by the duo of CSK Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Meanwhile, the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to kickstart from March 26th with a blockbuster opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
