Rohit Sharma couldn’t have asked for a better start to his captaincy stint for team India in the longest format of the game. After whitewashing the Sri Lankan cricket team in the 3-match T20I series, the Rohit-led team India defeated the visitors by an innings and 222 runs in the first Test.
Riding on the “Rockstar” Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round heroics, the Indian side ended a 2-match losing streak in Tests as they put behind the defeat against South Africa earlier this year to return to winning ways.
Ravindra Jadeja single-handedly dominated the Sri Lankans with both bat and ball as he became only the 6th player to hit a 150-plus score and pick up a 5-wicket haul in a Test match. Earlier Jadeja scored a stunning 175 not out to help India post a mammoth total of 574/8 declared in their first innings. Jadeja finished with the figures of 4/46 in the 2nd innings to follow up the 5-wicket haul that he picked in the first innings.
All thanks to his stellar performance captain Rohit Sharma did not have any hesitation to enforce the follow-on as the Indian cricket team could only bowl 65 overs in their first innings.
India’s senior player Ravi Ashwin also weaved magic with the bat as he also picked 4 wickets in the 2nd innings. The off-spinner started by removing opener Dimutth Karunaratne before getting the big wicket of Pathum Nissanka, who had hit a gritty 61 not out in the first innings.
Jadeja and Ashwin ran through the Sri Lankan batting line-up. While pacer Mohammed Shami picked 2 wickets, Jasprit Bumrah and Jayant Yadav went wicketless.
