Rohit Sharma has been smashing one record after another in recent times. Now elevated as India’s all-format captain, Rohit created another big world record when he stepped on the field on Sunday in the third T20I of the series against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala.

This game marked the 125th T20I match for Rohit Sharma, who had made his T20I debut in 2007. This is now the most number of T20I matches for any player in the world, as Sharma surpassed the 124-game record of Pakistani veteran Shoaib Malik, who is still an active T20I cricketer.

Among active players behind Sharma and Malik are England captain Eoin Morgan with 115 T20I caps and Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah with 113 T20Is under his belt while New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has featured in 112 T20Is.

Former India captain and talisman batsman Virat Kohli has 97 T20I caps.

Rohit Sharma also holds the record of most hundreds in T20I – 4 – followed by three each from Glenn Maxwell and Colin Munro. Known for his exquisite pull shot and sumptuously timed shots, Sharma has hit the second most number of sixes in T20Is – 155 – while Guptill leads the way with 165 maximums.

Speaking about Rohit Sharma and India, the Asian giants clean-swept another home series by 3-0 and equalled the record for most consecutive T20I wins (men’s), with 12 wins, a streak that started in the T20 World Cup, equalling Afghanistan and Romania’s streak.

Shreyas Iyer was the Man of the Series for his scores of 57*(28) in first T20I, 74*(44) in second T20I, and 73*(45) in the third T20I.

Skipper Sharma was extremely pleased with the performances of all the players having grabbed the chances given to them in absence of other players.

“We played very well. Lot of positives came out from the series. Want to understand what kind of bench strength we have. Good to give opportunities to those guys. Important to tell guys not to worry about your positions in the team. Want to fill whatever gaps we have. Keeping that in mind we want to move forward,” Rohit Sharma said.
