South Africa’s Under-19 batting sensation Dewald Brevis has been making a lot of news lately. The young cricketer, who is fondly called “Baby AB de Villiers”, all thanks to his swashbuckling batting style, was signed up by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3 crore in the evening session on Day 1 of the IPL Mega Auction in Bengaluru.

Dewald Brevis impressed one and all with his stunning performances in the recently-concluded U-19 World Cup. During the tournament, Baby AB amassed 506 runs, breaking the previous record held by the Indian batter Shikhar Dhawan by 1 run.

Dewald Brevis smashed two centuries and three fifties in the World Cup, and his batting style was something that caught everyone’s attention as it was noticeably similar to the legendary South African AB De Villiers.

Now Baby AB will be seen playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Dewald Brevis, who entered the IPL 2022 mega-auctions with a base price of INR 20 lakh, was bought by Mumbai Indians for INR 3 crore.

Meanwhile, the youngster can’t wait to play under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, who has led the Mumbai-based franchise to the IPL title five times.

Speaking to the Times of India in an exclusive interview, Dewald Brevis expressed his emotions on joining Mumbai Indians. He also revealed how Sachin Tendulkar has been one of his childhood heroes. Expressing gratitude, Baby AB said:

“It is a huge honour to be part of a franchise with an amazing record like Mumbai Indians. Me and my brother idolised so many players in the Mumbai family while we grew up. Mumbai Indians is a team that you always feel have a very good chance of winning the IPL and their past record shows just that. They have also in the past been very good at giving young players a chance and I am privileged that I have this opportunity and look forward to working with their world-class coaching staff. Sachin Tendulkar is one of my childhood heroes,”

He added:

“I am very excited to play under Rohit Sharma. He is someone that I admire and for a young player like me to be able to share a dressing room with a captain and player like Rohit is a dream come true. I will try and learn as much as I can from him,”
