Sunil Gavaskar Renamed ‘Dhoni Review System’ While Praising Rohit Sharma

Legendary India batsman Sunil Gavaskar coined a new name for the Decision Review System(DRS) after being impressed by Rohit Sharma, India’s new limited-overs skipper, during the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Indian bowlers bundled out the visitors for 176 in 43.5 overs after Rohit had elected to bowl first. However, Rohit Sharma and India needed much help from the third umpire as the hosts forced three on-field decisions to be overturned.

Sharma’s calmness and captaincy is often been compared to that of former captain MS Dhoni. His smartness was once again on show when he took three successful reviews after carefully listening to the bowlers and fielders.

Sitting in the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar lauded Sharma for his bang-on correct DRS calls. He gushed that while earlier the DRS was called the ‘Dhoni Review System’ in tribute to Dhoni who was more often than not correct with his calls, it should now be termed as the ‘Definitely Rohit System’.

“Rohit Sharma got those reviews spot on. Earlier when Dhoni used to get more right than wrong, it was called as Dhoni Review System. Now you can term it as ‘Definitely Rohit System’”: Sunil Gavaskar said on commentary.

The first of the three reviews overturned was that of left-hander Darren Bravo, who was trapped plumb in front by a straight going ball from Washington Sundar from around the wicket angle. The umpire denied the appeal, but Rohit went upstairs to have the decision changed.

Then, Nicholas Pooran missed a sweep off Yuzvendra Chahal, the ball turning in big and hitting him in line. The umpire, though, thought otherwise. Chahal was confident that the ball was in line and was hitting the sticks. Sharma stuck with his guts and went with Chahal for the review – upon which they were vindicated.

For the third review, Sharma got help from Virat Kohli, who came running in and said that he was sure that Shamarh Brooks had edged the ball off Chahal through to Pant before the bat hit the pads.

Chahal snapped up 4 wickets while Sundar picked three, and three were shared between Prasidh Krishna and Siraj. Holder fought valiantly for his fifty, and was supported by Fabian Allen’s 29 while no other West Indies batter crossed 20.
