After months of pondering over, the Lucknow franchise have finally announced their name: Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise announced this – their “identity” – via their official social media handles on Monday.
The RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) purchased the rights of the Lucknow team for a hefty sum of INR 7090 crore. This is the second time the RPSG will own an IPL franchise – in 2016 and 2017, they operated the Pune-based Rising Pune Supergiant(s) when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two years.
Lucknow have earlier announced opener KL Rahul ( bought for 17 crore) as their captain, who now also becomes the joint-highest paid player in the IPL; Virat Kohli was being paid 17 crore by RCB from IPL 2018 to 2021.
Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been picked for INR 9.2 crore while their third player is uncapped leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (INR 4 crore). They have a purse remaining of 59 crore going into the mega-auction.
Lucknow have appointed former Zimbabwe captain and England coach Andy Flower as their head coach, Vijay Dahiya as the assistant coach, and former India batsman and KKR captain Gautam Gambhir as the team mentor.

The other new team, based in Ahmedabad, is yet to announce their name.
The IPL 2022 mega-auction will take place on February 12 and 13. Cricbuzz has reported that the 15th edition of the IPL is set to start on March 27.
Also, the board is keen on hosting the entire tournament in Maharashtra. The key reason for this is that there are four grounds available in close proximity – Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (CCI), DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, and the MCA Stadium in Pune – eliminating the need for air travel.
Lucknow’s social media handles had earlier asked fans to suggest names for the franchise. However, now, since Lucknow’s new name is similar to Rising Pune Supergiants, fans really have been left annoyed by the franchise asking for their suggestions.
Memes soon started flowing in on Twitter. Here are some of the best memes after Lucknow announced their name:
