Former India opener Wasim Jaffer absolutely ripped into an Australian broadcaster who tried to mock India Test captain Virat Kohli. Australian speedster Mitchell Starc has made marked improvements in his batting, which has been evident in the ongoing Ashes series, where he’s scored 151 runs in 5 innings while remaining not out thrice.
This has coincided with a lean run of Virat Kohli. Australian channel ‘7 Cricket’ used this opportunity to highlight Starc’s decent form with the bat but also to have a dig at the Indian Test skipper.
Starc made 34 not out in the first innings of the Sydney Test. The broadcaster then put up a tweet comparing the Test batting averages of Starc and Kohli – since 2019, Starc is averaging 38.63 while Kohli is 37.17.
This didn’t go down well with the Indian fans. And Wasim Jaffer, a popular figure among netizens for his great sense of humour, took it upon himself to reply back in a savage way.
Jaffer quoted the tweet by reflecting on the ODI batting averages of Indian pacer Navdeep Saini and Aussie stalwart Steve Smith. It turns out that Saini, who has played 8 ODIs so far and scored 107 runs in 5 innings but has been dismissed only twice, has a batting average of 53.5! On the other hand, Steve Smith averages 43.34 in 128 ODIs.
Jaffer’s tweet went viral instantly and has gained over 48,000 likes.
ODI Career batting average:
Navdeep Saini: 53.50
Steve Smith: 43.34 ? https://t.co/1PrcZ0HkDf— Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) January 6, 2022
Speaking about Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper missed the second Test of the series against South Africa in Johannesburg, where India went down by 7 wickets. Kohli is expected to return in the third Test, to be played next week in Cape Town, with the series level at 1-1.
Once again, Kohli’s drought of three-figure score will be among heavy discussions. The right-hander has now gone over two years without an international century, the last one coming in November 2019.
