Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach and Australia’s batting legend Ricky Ponting congratulated Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer as he received his maiden cap in Tests ahead of his debut against New Zealand in the first of the 2-match Test series on Thursday.
Ricky Ponting has worked with Shreyas Iyer from close quarters while working as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League. In fact, it was the amazing combination of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting that took the Delhi-based franchise to new heights.
Delhi Capitals emerged out as one of the most consistent teams in the last few years of the IPL, where Shreyas Iyer played an instrument role – first as a skipper and later as a batsman. Shreyas was replaced by Rishabh Pant due to an injury ahead of the 14th season.
The last few months were terribly hard for Iyer, after having missed the majority of the 2021 edition due to a shoulder injury, with Rishabh Pant leading the team in his absence. However, the cricketer made a solid return to his side in the UAE leg of the tournament and is now all set to make a fantastic debut for India in the longest formats of the game.
Meanwhile, the talented young star was an emotional man as he received his maiden Test cap from none other than India’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, before the start of play on Thursday. After receiving the cap from the legend himself, an emotional Iyer kissed the cap.

After watching Iyer making his debut in the longer format of the game, Ricky Ponting took to his social media and showered praises at him. Ponting quoted the BCCI video of Iyer’s debut cap ceremony on Twitter and wrote:
“Having seen all the work you’ve put in over the last few years, very well deserved and only the beginning for you mate. Proud of you @ShreyasIyer15.”
