MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the most successful skippers to have ever played the game, having won all the ICC trophies for his country. As a skipper of the Indian cricket team, Dhoni set plenty of right examples both on and off the field. He took the Indian cricket team to the number 1 position in the world.

On Monday, during the much-awaited event – ICC Awards 2020, Dhoni who announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, bagged a few prestigious awards. Among them, Dhoni was awarded the ICC’s Spirit Of Cricket Award of the Decade.

According to the ICC, the former Indian skipper was chosen as the winner of the award by the fans for his commendable act. Dhoni was awarded the award because of his heart-winning gesture towards Ian Bell during the Nottingham Test in the year 2011.

For the unversed, the incident took place during the third day of the Nottingham Test, when Ian Bell was dismissed after a bizarre run-out.

Ian Bell was at the non-striker’s end, started walking towards the pavilion for Tea, thinking that the previous shot was no longer in play. However, the ball hadn’t crossed the boundary ropes and neither had the umpires declared ‘over’.

Eventually, Praveen got the throw-in and Abhinav Mukund took off the bails. Followed by which, team India appealed for a run-out. Umpire gave Bell ‘Out’ however, during the tea break England captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower headed to the Indian dressing room to have a word with Dhoni.

MS Dhoni later overturned the decision and as a result, Ian Bell, who was batting at 137 runs walked back to the field.

While announcing the big news, ICC wrote:

“MS DHONI wins the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade. The former India captain was chosen by fans unanimously for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test in 2011,”
