The outbreak of Coronavirus has affected a lot of sporting events around the world, as they have either got postponed or were canceled. Amidst the pandemic, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to call-off the India vs South Africa’s ODI series.
However, it seems like the honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee isn’t happy with the BCCI’s President Sourav Ganguly’s decision to cancel the ODI match between India and South Africa, that was slated to take place in Kolkata’s iconic stadium Eden Gardens on March 18.
After the opening ODI match between India and South Africa was called-off due to rain, the BCCI decided to cancel the second ODI match between India and South Africa that was slated to take place in Lucknow on March 15.
Mamta Banerjee isn’t happy at all with Sourav Ganguly’s decision as he didn’t inform the Kolkata Police before taking a decision on the match. Talking to a leading media, CM of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee said:
“Everything was alright with Sourav. But they should have told us a word, nothing else. When the match was scheduled to be held in Kolkata, at least the Kolkata Police should have been informed,”
She added:
“I am saying this with due respect. Why would not the state chief secretary or home secretary or police commissioner or someone else in the government be informed? How is that if you inform us after making a decision? We are not asking you to stop the match. But what would you have done had you been in this situation?”
Besides the India vs South Africa ODI series, a lot of other sporting events including PSL, IPL, and many others have also been affected. While the overseas players, who were playing in PSL, are moving back to their country amidst the tournament, the PCB has decided that the remaining matches of the tournament will be played behind the closed doors. On the other hand, BCCI has postponed the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League to April 15.
