2020 had a comical start as far as cricket is concerned. The first match between Virat Kohli led Indian cricket team and Sri Lanka was called off without a ball being bowled after water seeped in through leaking covers resulting in wet pitch which made the playing area unfit for play.
Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper did win the toss and chose to bowl first but soon it started raining. It was a packed house in Guwahati as fans were very excited about the first game of the new year, however, the rain gods had some other plans. The rain came down heavily after the toss took place.
Initially, it looked more like a passing shower but just when the fans were waiting for the good news, the rain returned again. Making the situation even worse. An extra cover was placed on the 22 yards, taking more care this time. However, somehow water leaked from the covers leaving wet patches on the pitch.
From steam iron, hair-dryer, vacuum dryer to Super Sopper, a series of hilarious events took place as the staff tried everything to dry the pitch but no cricket was played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. And finally, the on-field umpires called-off the game off as the playing conditions were not up to the ICC standards.
Amidst this, Virat Kohli also visited the ground for the inspection. The picture of the same was shared by BCCI via their official Twitter handle, where he can be seen on his knees, trying to get a feel of the pitch with his hand. Sharing the picture, BCCI wrote:
“Next inspection at 9.30 PM IST. *fingers crossed*”
