Despite India being one of the most reckoning forces in cricket over the last five to six years, their batting in the longest format of the game has struggled vehemently.
Pujara, Kohli and Rahane, the three most reliable pillars of success in Indian cricket have kept on blowing hot and cold in recent years. Kohli, occasionally, managing to pull out a few tricks from his sleeves has surpassed the other two.
Pujara has been very inconsistent and has hardly got a couple of good scores at the most in an entire series. Sadly, for him, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc exposed one of his biggest weaknesses and that was on the corridor of uncertainty on the off-stump.
In recent times, Pujara has either been removed by being bowled at in the aforementioned area or courtesy of a soft dismissal. Rahane did manage to prise out a crucial century in Australia but post that he hasn’t been anywhere close to great.
The woeful showdown in batting has kept pushing India to the backfoot in crunch situations and it was India’s sudden collapse with the bat that saw New Zealand managing to walk away with the much-coveted mace.
Ever since the beginning of the New Year, Rohit Sharma has been India’s leading run-scorer in Test matches. In 2021, the Hitman is the runaway leader with 621 runs and it is still going to increase as he is unbeaten at Lords at the moment.

The man in hot pursuit of the ace has been another consistent batsman, Rishabh Pant who has always been in a decent touch right since Australia happened.
The players who are next in line are Cheteshwar Pujara with 380 runs, Gill with 334 runs and Rahane with 268 runs and with the current performances, the scenario won’t likely change in the near offing to arrive.
Ever since his introduction in the WTC as an opener, Sharma has shown exemplary command with the bat and continues his exploits in a comprehensive manner.
