The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL committee have started their preparations for the IPL 2023 auction, the date and venue of which have been confirmed by sources in the knowledge of developments.

The IPL 2023, which will be the 16th edition of the competition, is likely to get underway in the last week of March, with the tournament returning to the home and away format for the first time since 2019.

“The next season of men’s IPL will also go back to the home and away format with all 10 teams playing their home matches at their designated venues,” BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said earlier.

This time it will be a mini-auction. The last one was a mega-auction before the IPL 2022, which saw the addition of two new teams, one of which, Gujarat Titans, went on to win the trophy.

IPL 2023: BCCI to organise auction on December 16 ahead of next season, says report

Here is everything we have learnt so far about the IPL 2023 mini-auction:

What is the date and venue of IPL 2023 auction?

The IPL 2023 mini-auction will take place in Bangalore with a tentative date of December 16. But a final decision on the date will be taken by the newly-formed IPL Governing Council meeting after the AGM on October 16.

What is the purse allotted to all franchises?

In addition to the money remaining from the previous mega-auction, each franchise will have an additional INR 5 crore to spend, making the overall auction purse INR 95 crore for each team.

Punjab Kings had the largest purse left, INR 3.45 crore after the last mega-auction. Chennai Super Kings had INR 2.95 crore left, Royal Challengers Bangalore INR 1.55 crore, Rajasthan Royals INR 0.95 crore, and Kolkata Knight Riders had INR 0.45 crore left over. Defending champions Gujarat Titans were left with INR 0.15 crore while three teams – Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals – had INR 0.10 crore, and Lucknow Super Giants had exhausted their entire purse.

How many players a franchise can retain?

Since this is a mini-auction, there is no limit to the number of players a franchise can retain (squad of 25 with a maximum of 8 overseas as usual). The franchises can retain all their players from the last season, but there are likely to release some to create purse and space to add new players at the mini-auction.

The IPL council has asked the ten franchises to submit their list of retained and released players by November 15.

“It will be a short auction as we had the big one last season. The last auction was the major one and the next three will be mini auctions as the teams want to develop the squads,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

When will the trading window be closed?

The trading window is opened and it will close 7 days before the mini-auction.

Can the franchises keep replacement players?

Last season, six franchises roped in replacement players. According to the rules, the franchises will have to decide whether to retain the replacement player or the original player, or both provided the maximum player limit rule is followed.
