Even though the next big T20 event is the T20 World Cup 2022, from October 16-November 13 in Australia, fans are already excited about the IPL 2023 auction.
Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, won the IPL 2022 – their maiden title in their debut season! All other franchises will be aiming to strengthen their squad to match that of the Titans’. On the other hand, the two most successful IPL teams – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings – finished as the bottom of the 10-team table this year and they will aim to fill the holes in the squad and XI.
The preparations for the IPL 2023 auction are already underway, and the franchises have begun their brainstorming to get the best players at the cheapest prices possible.
The IPL 2022 saw the addition of two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – and hence, the last auction was a mega-auction with teams being allowed only 4 retentions and no right-to-match cards.
This time, for the IPL 2023, it will be a mini-auction. The number of teams will remain 10 for next year as well.
Here are all the details with regards to the IPL 2023 auction that are available in the knowledge:

What is the date of the IPL 2023 auction?
The IPL 2023 is likely to take place on December 18, Sunday. It has been reported that the BCCI has decided to conduct the IPL 2023 auction in mid-December, even though the previous mega-auction was held in February.
The exact date(s) for the IPL 2023 auction will be updated when the board/IPL governing council releases the official communication.
When will the trading window for IPL 2023 open?
Teams will be given the opportunity to trade players for players or all cash with other teams as to fill the gaps in their squads or make space in the purse for the auction.
The trading window is usually opened a month prior to the auction date so that teams can mutually negotiate deals and improve their squads or have more purse. This time around, the most probable auction date is 18th December, so we can expect the trading window will be opened on or before 15th November.
What are the retention rules for IPL 2023 auction?
There is no retention rule for the mini-auction. Franchises can keep their full squad from the last season. But it has never happened because franchises have always released some players ahead of a mini-auction to get better players who will be in the auction or get back the same players at cheaper prices.
