Mumbai Indians’ spearhead pacer Jasprit Bumrah will have the chance to become the first Indian fast bowler to take 250 T20 wickets, when – and if – he plays against the Chennai Super Kings on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium for match 59 of IPL 2022.
Having bowled for India, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat across 204 T20 matches, Jasprit Bumrah has taken 248 wickets and is the third leading Indian bowler in T20s; off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has snapped up 273 wickets while leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is second on the list with 270 scalps to his name and Bumrah is third and leading among Indian pacers. Veteran domestic and IPL seamer Jaydev Unadkat has taken 201 wickets in his T20 career which started in 2010.
These 248 wickets for the Ahmedabad-born Bumrah have come at an average of 21 while conceding at 7 runs per over. He has 67 wickets in T20Is and 140 wickets in the IPL with the remaining coming at the domestic level.
Despite attaining greatness and being regarded as arguably India’s finest ever white-ball bowler, it was only in his latest game that Bumrah took his maiden T20 five-wicket haul.
Against Kolkata Knight Riders, Bumrah recorded his best T20 bowling figures of 5/10 – second-best by an Indian bowler in the IPL – while showcasing a world-class exhibition of bowling short and back of length. Starting with the big dismissal of Andre Russell, Bumrah rocked the Knight Riders in the death overs, bouncing out Nitish Rana, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins and Sheldon Jackson, helping MI restrict KKR for 165.
However, the MI batters couldn’t make use of the momentum provided by Bumrah’s fiery death overs spell and lost the game by 52 runs. Despite ending up on the losing side, Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Match for his memorable bowling performance.
“Always a good feeling to contribute but the important thing is for the team to win. We had our chance to do that but couldn’t get it done. That’s the way it is. I don’t keep track of figures or goals, my aim is to stick to the process. Sometimes you bowl well but don’t get wickets. Can’t get desperate. Just want to contribute in whatever way I can,” Bumrah had said after the loss.
He will be up against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings next and fans will be expecting another thrilling show from the Jasprit Bumrah.
