Here’s Why Yuvraj Singh Wants Rishabh Pant To Lead India In Tests

Legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh strongly feels that Rishabh Pant will be a future India captain. Pant captained the Delhi Capitals last season to the playoffs and his side is doing well this year too.

Rohit Sharma is currently India’s all-format skipper, being given the position earlier this year, however, the 34-year-old is only a stopgap solution. Rohit has had three deputies so far – KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah; Pant, 24, was the vice-captain in the T20I series against West Indies when Rahul was injured.

Yuvraj Singh said that now that Pant is being groomed in the leadership role, and once he becomes the captain he should be given a longer rope to produce favourable results. He also cited the example of MS Dhoni, who was made India’s white-ball captain at the age of 26.

“You must get someone ready. Like Mahi became captain out of nowhere but they made him, right! Then he evolved. Keeper is always a good thinker because he always has the best view on the ground,” Yuvraj Singh said on Sports18’s show ‘Home of Heroes’.

“You pick a young guy who can be a future captain, give him time and don’t expect miracles in the first six months or a year. I feel you must believe in the younger guys to get the job done,” Yuvraj Singh added.

Rishabh Pant, however, has been subject to plenty of criticism for his audacious batting, and risk-loving stroke-making. Yuvraj Singh slammed the critics questioning Pant to be mature, pointing out that even he and Kohli were immature early in their careers, especially at the age Rishabh Pant is.

With Rishabh Pant the only Asian wicket-keeper to have Test centuries in both England and Australia, the former all-rounder reckoned Pant is a legend in the making.

“I was immature at that age, Virat was immature when he was captain at that age. But he (Pant) is maturing with time. I don’t know how the support staff think about it, but I think he is the right guy to lead the Test team.

“You already have four Test hundreds. In terms of best wicket-keeper batsman, I see Rishabh could be the future legend,” Yuvraj Singh hailed the youngster.
