Sri Lanka would have wanted Mathews, their over night batsman to continue steering Sri Lanka’s pursuit on saving the match on the 5th day. But like every other thing that failed for the Lankans in this series, this too failed.

The very 5th over of the day Mathews was sent back to the pavilion. But there’s a story of failure of the umpire in this dismissal.

The replays clearly showed that Mathews was out on a No-Ball. Mathews tried a defend a delivery bowled by Jadeja but the extra turn and bounce got better of him. Mathews edged it to the slips and Rahane made no mistake. The dismissal seemed perfect until replays showed that Jadeja had overstepped while bowling that particular delivery.

Umpires failed

The umpire didn’t even see Jadeja overstepping. This was an example of sheer neglect by the umpire as he failed to spot the overstepping or oven go upstairs to the TV umpire. There was every reason why Mathews would have felt infuriated after he saw the replay.

This neglect of the umpire didn’t cost Sri Lanka the match fortunately otherwise this would have added to the already long list of controversies this match has had.
