IPL 2022: Twitterati Can’t Keep After Shubman Gill Played A Blinder

Last season, KKR head coach Brendon McCullum had called out Shubman Gill, not in direct terms, for his strike rate of below 120, that he had been batting at for the past couple of seasons, and that clearly didn’t adhere to the former New Zealand skipper’s philosophy of playing with freedom and expressing yourself.

Gill wasn’t retained by KKR and was picked as the third pick by the new franchise Gujarat Titans. He got out for a duck in the first game of IPL 2022 against Lucknow trying to smash out fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.

The opener is coming back from an injury and doubts would have been creeping into his mind, but he kept it out on Saturday evening in his solid knock of 84 runs off 46 balls against a decent Delhi Capitals bowling attack, compounded by seeing Matthew Wade edge on to Rishabh Pant on the third ball of the innings failing to connect with his scoop shot to the wily Mustafizur Rahman.

Gill’s first release shot came in the second over to Shardul Thakur with his trademark pull shot. He then cut the same bowler before launching Axar Patel, who doesn’t give much air to deal with, over square leg. Gill’s motor was up and running as he grew in confidence.

Following the struggling Vijay Shankar’s wicket, he got an able ally in skipper Hardik Pandya. Pandya played the anchor role, giving Gill the freedom to target his bowlers and play his shots. The young opener did and brought up his fifty off 32 balls.

He upped the ante then, tearing it into Khaleel Ahmed for consecutive boundaries. And while he lost Pandya at the other end, Gill launched further an attack on Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, smoking the in-form spinners for three maximums down the ground and over cow corner.

It was perhaps the best, and the most boldly Gill had batted so far in his IPL career, but Khaleel cut his stay short, 16 runs away from a century, caught in the deep- a way that McCullum doesn’t mind any of his batsmen getting out in. Strike rate of 182, Shubman Gill must have made his former KKR coach proud with his knock today – attacking, but bereft of chances for the opposition.

Netizens enjoyed this high-quality knock from Shubman Gill and lauded his batting efforts on Twitter.
