The three-time IPL winners, Chennai Super Kings will look to match the record of Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 and win their fourth IPL championship. They were inches away from winning their fourth IPL title in 2019 but unfortunately, the Mumbai-based franchise edged them by a single run to lift the trophy. CSK had won the title in 2018 but cricket has changed a lot in the last few months.
The frequency of Super Overs has increased a lot in cricket as the teams now focus on preparing specialist options for Super Overs. New Zealand lost a lot of matches because of their inability to bowl properly in the Super Overs. So, Chennai Super Kings’ skipper MS Dhoni would be keen to ensure that he has enough resources in hand if at all CSK land in a Super Over situation.
While Chennai has a plethora of options in its bowling attack, here are the 3 bowlers MS Dhoni can select to bowl the Super Over.
Ravindra Jadeja:
The left-arm spinner from Saurashtra, Ravindra Jadeja will play a key role for Chennai in both the departments. While Chennai will need him more in the bowling department, MS Dhoni can surprise the fans by picking him as the bowler to bowl the six crucial deliveries in the Super Over. Jadeja can finish his over quickly leaving the opposition with very less time to rethink their strategies.
Jadeja has played a lot of cricket in India. He knows about every stadium in the nation besides, if the match is taking place in Chennai then CSK would be tempted to give the Super Over to a spinner.
Imran Tahir :
Another spin bowling option for Chennai Super Kings who can be selected to bowl the Super Over is the South African leg-spinner, Imran Tahir. The IPL 2019 Purple Cap winner knows the art of picking wickets at regular intervals. A Super Over only has 2 wickets so, in case Tahir is assigned the Super Over responsibilities then, he may not even allow the opposition team to bat for the entire course of the Super Over.
Tahir has the caliber of picking two wickets in two balls and ending the Super Over there and there itself. So, he will be a key player for CSK in Super Over situation.
Deepak Chahar :
If Chennai have Sam Curran in their team, then they can give him the opportunity of bowling the Super Over however, he may not feature frequently in their playing XI. Deepak Chahar could be a reliable option in this situation. He recently broke the record of best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in T20 cricket with figures of 6/7.
This shows that Chahar can take wickets at will. Also, in conditions where there is no assistance to spin bowler, CSK will have to look further Jadeja and Tahir. In that case, Deepak will be the prime pick because he is a completely different player when MS Dhoni guides him from behind the stumps.
Thus, these are the 3 bowling options CSK have in case they enter a Super Over situation.
