IPL Auction 2020: 3 Players Chennai Super Kings Should Have Picked

The IPL 2020 auction, that took place yesterday in Kolkata, was the most awaited event of the year for the franchises and the fans alike. Four times IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, were no less excited and made their best effort to build a team that could look to dethrone the reigning champions Mumbai Indians in the next edition of the IPL.

The Super Kings picked a total of four players in the IPL 2020 auction, which raised a few eyebrows as well. There were two reasons behind this. One, four out of four players are predominantly bowlers, which emphasizes on the fact that the former kings of IPL are looking to strengthen their bowling lineup ahead of the next tournament. Two, the selection of Piyush Chawla, who is the newest member of the Daddies Army, for a staggering amount of Rs. 6.75 Crores. The player had a patchy IPL 2019 and was released by his former employees Kolkata Knight Riders at the end of the last term. This selection was even more surprising as CSK, who already have the likes of Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma in their ranks, to go for another leg spinner in the form of Piyush Chawla.

Here is a look at the Chennai Super Kings squad for IPL 2020.

Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KM Asif, Ravindra Jadeja, M Vijay, MS Dhoni, Josh Hazlewood, Kedar Jadhav, Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Imran Tahir, Deepak Chahar, Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Santner, Dwayne Bravo, Lungi Ngidi, Sam Curran, Monu Kumar, Shane Watson, Sai Kishore.

Though their selection pattern showed CSK’s intention ahead of the IPL 2020, they could have gone for some other players as well. Here are a few whose inclusion could have given the four times IPL champions a solid impetus ahead of the next edition of the tournament.

Chris Lynn (Sold to MI for Rs. 2 Crores)

It was definitely a surprise to see Kolkata Knight Riders part ways with one of their most dependable batters ahead of the IPL 2020 auction. Mumbai Indians seemed to be making the most of this opportunity as they opted to bring the Australian batsman to bolster their batting lineup ahead of the new season. However, the inclusion of the player could have been profitable for the Super Kings as well. With Shane Watson on the wrong side of his thirties and the likes of Faf Du Plessis and Murali Vijay not being able to make the most of the chances provided to them, the inclusion of Chris Lynn could have been a huge statement for CSK ahead of the new season in IPL.

Shimron Hetmyer (Sold to DC for Rs. 7.75 Crores)

Though the West Indian batsman did not have the best time in the last edition of the IPL, his current form could have provided a lot of room for relief to the Chennai Super Kings if they would have picked him for the next term. With the kind of form he is currently in, Hetmyer could have played a crucial role in stabilizing the middle order for the former IPL champions. However, he was finally picked up by the Delhi Capitals and will don their blue jersey in IPL 2020. Hetmyer was a big miss for CSK at the IPL 2020 auction.

Tom Banton (Sold to KKR for Rs. 1 Crore)

The explosive batsman could have been an exciting addition to the Chennai Super Kings lineup. Known for his versatility, Banton has the ability to change his gear according to the situation and provide stability to his side. CSK could have made the most of this opportunity but faltered as KKR brought in the player to stabilize their batting lineup ahead of IPL 2020.
