Gautam Gambhir had a worst journey in this season of Indian Premier League. He started off as the skipper of Delhi Daredevils but had to step down from his position because of the consistent defeats of the team and his non-performance. After he resigned, Shreyas Iyer was made the new skipper of the team.

Talking about the team, Delhi Daredevils was the first team to get eliminated from the league. They consistently gave poor performances throughout the tournament. The team was on the last position of the points table as the team lost 9 matches off the 14 they played.

However, a few players from the team including, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Abhishek Sharma gave brilliant performances throughout the tournament and impressed each and all with their extra-ordinary talent. But Gautam Gambhir didn’t play a single match after he stepped down from his position. He only played in 5 matches in which he managed to score only 85 runs.
Earlier talking about the same, the coach of the team, Ricky Ponting had said:
“After resigning from the captaincy, it was Gambhir’s decision to sit out of the playing XI,”

However, Gautam Gambhir has denied this fact that it was his decision to stay out of the playing XI. Gautam Gambhir cleared the air by revealing that he was ready to play for the team even after stepping down from the position of skipper, he said:
“I never dropped myself from the playing XI. If that was the case, then I would’ve announced the retirement as well. A lot of cricket is still left in me,”

Not just this, Gautam Gambhir also cleared the reasons for stepping down from the position of skipper, he said:
“The team was losing matches continuously under my leadership and I resigned taking the whole responsibility for the same. But I never rejected from playing in the side and the team management and Ricky Ponting is also aware of this fact,”

Talking about the retirement, Gautam Gambhir said that he has no intentions of retiring from the game anytime soon. He said:
“I am not retiring right now. The next season of IPL is still a year away and if I do well in the first-class season, then I will play next year as well,”
Well, we really hope that next year Gautam Gambhir returns with a bang.
