5 Cricketers Whose Careers Were Ruined By The ICL

Not so long ago, a league named Indian cricket league was introduced in the cricket world. The ICL was the first league to introduce the franchise system. Though, it was introduced to nurture the young talents from all around the world, however, it turned out to be a horror. Cricket boards from the various countries started putting bans on their players in order to stop them from playing in this league. The league is also responsible for ending the careers of 5 cricketers.

Here, we bring you a list of 5 cricketers, whose careers came to an end because of participating in ICL, have a look:




1. Aftab Ahmed:

Aftab Ahmed, who was nothing short of a shining star for Bangladesh’s cricket team. He made his ODI debut at the age of 19 and went on to play 85 ODIs, 16 Tests, and 11 T20 matches for Bangladesh’s cricket team.




However, Bangladesh’s cricket board imposed a ban of 10-year on players from playing in the Indian Cricket League, Aftab Ahmed was involved in this ban and his career ended from there.

2. Rohan Gavaskar:

When Rohan Gavaskar, the younger son of Sunil Gavaskar, made his debut in the cricket world, people had a lot of hope from this player, however, he failed to do anything special. He played only 11 ODIs for India. It was in the year 2007 when Rohan joined the Indian Cricket League however, he still could not leave a lasting impression there. He was one of the 71 players who were granted amnesty by the BCCI and he was available for selection in the national squad, however, he failed to leave the mark.

3. Justin Kemp:

Justin Kemp, the former South African captain, and a hard-hitting batsman were at the peak of his career when he became a part of the Indian cricket league. He was known for his brilliance with the bat and for his match-finishing skills.

During his career, he played 85 ODIs for South Africa. Besides this, he represented his side in 4 tests and 8 T20s. However, his decision to join the ICL ruined his career.

2. Mohammad Sami:

One of the most talented cricketers in the Pakistan cricket team. He made his debut in the year 2001 when he took 220 wickets. During his career, he has played 36 Tests, 87 ODIs and 7 T20s for Pakistan. However, after joining ICL, he couldn’t play for his team. Though he is still active in cricket he is no more the bowler once he used to be.

1. Shane Bond:

Kiwi bowler, Shane Bond was called a traitor after he joined the Indian cricket league. He was one of the most talented bowlers, who used to bowl at 150 km per hour and has taken 87 wickets in 18 tests. Besides this, he has taken 147 wickets in 82 ODIs. However, after he joined the ICL, his career could never really flourish and it ended because of petty politics.
