Professional cricket, or any professional sport for that matter, is not a very long career. You get to play it for a certain period of time and it’s over.
While you get paid a huge amount of money till the time you are playing cricket at the international level, you also know that you are not going to continue having the same sort of income right through and hence investment is very important for the future.
Many cricketers over the years have invested in various businesses and it’s something that the modern-day cricketers are doing as well.
Here are some of the modern-day cricketers who have invested in start-ups:
MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni was the most expensive cricketer to have been bought in the first-ever auction of the IPL. He went at the price of INR 6 Crore.
The former Indian captain has also spent most of his career being in the top bracket of the BCCI central contracts. Since he has been as big a superstar as he is, he has had a lot of advertisement offers at his disposal as well.
It won’t be an overstatement to say that Dhoni has been one of the highest-earning Indian cricketers in the last decade or so and he has invested his money wisely.
Dhoni has not only launched his own footwear brand “Seven”, but he has also invested in a couple of start-ups named “Cars24” and “Khatabook” whose stocks are on the rise.
Virat Kohli
If anyone who is close to Dhoni or probably would have surpassed Dhoni with his earnings in the last decade, it’s the Indian captain Virat Kohli.
Kohli has not only been given an A+ contract by the BCCI, but he is also the highest-paid cricketer in the IPL at the moment.
Kohli has a clothing brand named “Wrogn” and he also owns a restaurant in Delhi named “Nueva”.
Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh has been the most expensive player in the IPL auctions a couple of times. The dashing left-hander, who was the man of the tournament in World Cup 2011, runs YouWeCan ventures.
YouWeCan is, however, not a business set-up. It has actually been established with the purpose of charity and helping cancer patients.
Sunil Gavaskar
Modern-day cricket watchers might not be aware of the cricketing heroics of Sunil Gavaskar, but he is arguably India’s greatest test opener of all time.
Gavaskar faced fearsome West Indies fast bowlers of the eighties without helmets and once held the record of scoring the most number of Test hundreds for India.
Gavaskar has invested in a start-up named “Binca games”.
Sachin Tendulkar
Who doesn’t know Sachin Tendulkar? The former Indian captain, who was also a part of the Indian World Cup-winning team of 2011, is regarded by many as the greatest batsman the game of cricket has ever seen.
Sachin has invested in a couple of start-up companies named “Smaaash” and “Smartron India”.
Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa was seen as a very promising youngster when he had the first burst onto the U19 level, but he couldn’t live up to the expectations at the senior level.
The right-hander still had some memorable moments with the Indian team one of which was the T20 World Cup triumph in South Africa in 2007.
Uthappa has invested in a start-up named “HealthEminds”.
Mohit Sharma
Mohit Sharma was a part of the Indian team for the ODI World Cup 2015 and played most of the games as the third pacer.
Although Mohit is not a part of the Indian set-up anymore, he is still active in the IPL. He has invested in a start-up named “Crossahead”.
