Well, the incident happened during the semi-finale of World Cup 2003 when Adam Gilchrist was yet to became a star. With this incident he left both the teams and audience stunned. Adam Gilchrist tried to hit the second ball but got an edge and the ball ended in the hands of Kumar Sangakkara.
However, he was given a ‘not-out’ by the umpires, but Adam Gilchrist walked off after touching the ball, which left everyone in the state of shock.

In a recent interview, Adam Gilchrist revealed the reason behind this incident which had left the deep and long-lasting impact on Adam’s mind. Talking about the incident he said :
“There was this wily old leg-spinner bowling to me and I went back and played this cut shot and smashed it straight into the keeper’s gloves and got given not out,”
He revealed that the fields were very frustrated with the decision of the umpires though the bowler didn’t react much. He was surprised for not being given out despite of the heavy edge.

Gilchrist was himself left in the state of shock and embarrassment after he realized what he did and for the same reasons, he even apologized from the bowler for what he did but the bowler’s reply hit him hard in the heart like a dagger. The bowler replied :
“Oh, don’t worry about it. It obviously means more to you at the moment than it does to me,”
The incident taught Adam Gilchrist a lesson for life but he did what no batsmen would have done and this is what stings him till now.
