Who is Jagmohan Dalmiya? 10 facts you need to know about the new BCCI president

Jagmohan Dalmiya, on Monday, was elected to the post of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief after N Srinivasan, decided against contesting the presidential elections in wake of a Supreme Court ruling, which barred him from standing for elections while having interests in Chennai Super Kings, citing ‘conflict of interest’. Jagmohan Dalmiya is back as BCCI president more than a decade after he last held the top job.
Here are 10 facts you need to know about the next BCCI president:
  • Jagmohan Dalmiya started his career as a wicket keeper batsman. In one instance he also scored a double hundred.
  • Jagmohan Dalmiya has been an important face in Indian cricket for over 30 years, ever since he was appointed the secretary of the Rajasthan club in the late 1970s. Dalmiya had become a member for the Rajasthan club in the 1950s. Dalmiya joined the BCCI in 1979 and was appointed its treasurer in 1983, the same year India won the World Cup for the first time.
  • 1990 was an important year for Dalmiya, when he won the elections for the post of BCCI secretary by a single vote. He was chosen as the BCCI secretary again from 1993-94 and 1996-97, after which he resigned and took over as the ICC president in 1997.
  • Jagmohan Dalmiya became the BCCI president in 2001 and held that post till 2004.
  • In the year 2005, Jagmohan Dalmiya was awarded the International Journal of the History of Sports Achievement; an award for administrative excellence in sport.
  • In November 2001, Dalmiya was involved in a tussle with the ICC when Sachin Tendulkar faced allegations of ball-tampering on the fifth and final day of the second Test match between South Africa and India.
  • Jagmohan Dalmiya was given the nickname of the Asian Tiger as at one point of time he held almost all the cricket administrative positions including the President of the ICC.
  • The 13 hour debate: The mastermind administrator was responsible to bring the 1996 World Cup to the subcontinent following a 13 hour debate before which the tournament almost went to England.
  • The BCCI’s accounts which had showed a deficit of Rs 81.60 lakh when Dalmiya became its secretary in the early 1990’s recorded a profit within a year making it the world’s richest body with a turnover of more than Rs 100 crore.
  • The World Cup under his management made a profit of 26 million pounds that made Dalmiya one of the top 6 sport executives in the world.
