Kumar Sangakkara: Just one double hundred away from Sir Don’s record and fastest to reach 12,000 Test runs

Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara, on Sunday, said he would love to equal Sir Don Bradman’s record of 12 double hundreds in Test match cricket. Sangakkara, 37, smashed a brilliant double hundred against New Zealand in the second Test of the ongoing series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. On a green top, Sri Lanka lost 5 wickets for 78 runs, but Sangakkara was least bothered with the swinging conditions and played one of his best Test knocks ever.

Kumar Sangakkara has now scored 11 double-hundreds in Test cricket, and he is just one double hundred behind the great Sir Don Bradman.

“I would love to equal Bradman. It just depends on how everything pans out after this World Cup. It’s really hard to predict what will happen and what my thoughts will be about my future,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by skysports.com.

Sangakkara has announced that he will retire from ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup, but he is yet take a call on his Test career. Now that he is so close to Sir Don Bradman’s long-standing record, he would be inspired to play some more Test cricket so that he can break Sir Don’s record which has stood since Bradman’s retirement in 1948.

Sangakkara batted for 412 minutes and scored 203 runs off 306 balls. It was an innings of authority at a time when top 5 Sri Lankan batsmen struggled to put bat to ball. Sangakkara scored 203 off Sri Lanka’s 365 runs, and this shows the importance of his knock. Sangakkara also reached the milestone of 12,000 Test runs and he became the quickest batsman to score 12,000 runs in Test cricket.

Sangakkara is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen to have ever played the game. His records are extraordinary and his achievements are at par with some of the greatest batsmen of the game.
