TEST CRICKET: The Ineffective D-Company of Indian Cricket

Fletcher (L) Dawes (R)

Dawes, Duncan and Dhoni, the D company of Indian cricket, has failed to prove its worth, as far as Test cricket is concerned. Four successive series losses, inexplicable tactics, awful bowling performances. In the face of such an abysmal record abroad and a period highlighted by questionable selections, horrendous bowling, and highly ineffective and defensive leadership, it is shocking that these 3 men have managed to hold their positions for so long.

Joe Dawes has been the bowling coach for exactly 2 years, and in that time, India’s bowling has gone from bad to worse. Teams, these days, back themselves to score 100+ runs against India in the death overs, and no matter how many runs batters put on the board, Indian fans are never sure about their bowlers. In this period, there has been visible improvement in any of the bowlers. In fact, some of the bowlers, like Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who started off their careers well, have not been bowling well off late. It would be just fair to say that, Dawes has failed in his job as the bowling coach of India. There’s not even one bowler who we can say has improved under Dawes. His presence in the Indian camp, as the bowling coach of India, even after all these failures, is shocking, to say the least.

Since the time Duncan Fletcher took charge of Indian cricket as the head coach, India have managed only 1 away victory in 15 Tests. Former India all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath said: “I don’t understand the use of having Fletcher if he is not delivering. Nobody is raising questions about the coach and support staff.”

Duncan Fletcher, even after Team India’s abysmal performances abroad, has not been sacked.

England team director Andy Flower resigned after one bad series. Mickey Arthur was sacked immediately after Australia was whitewashed in India. But, it seems, Fletcher is unquestionable.

There are several cases against Mahendra Singh Dhoni; that his refusal to see beyond his blue-eyed boys is what is ailing Indian cricket now; that in in Test cricket he has been found wanting time and again; that he is ultra-defensive when it came to Tests.

It is hard to find people who still agree that MSD should continue to lead the Indian team. But, he’s still there. I have always tried to stay away from this argument, but now, I also think that, his position as the captain of Chennai Super Kings, a team where BCCI President N Srinivasan has a major interest, has helped him in retaining his job as the captain of India.
The question that needs to be answerednow is–“When will the BCCI sack the D-company— Duncan, Dawes and Dhoni?”
