T20 World Cup 2022: Explaining Group 1 Qualification Scenario

Australia vs England T20 World Cup 2022 match in Melbourne, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, was being deemed as a virtual ‘knockout’ contest for the two teams. However,  persistent rain at the stadium eventually resulted in the match being abandoned without a ball being bowled. Not just this, but earlier, the Afghanistan vs Ireland match was also washed out because of the rain. The match between Afghanistan and New Zealand was also washed out without a ball being bowled.

It was the second consecutive rain-affected fixture for Ireland too. Notably, out of the five matches so far scheduled to be played in Melbourne, only India v Pakistan has gone ahead as planned. Two more games are planned to be played in Melbourne, the final game in Group Two between India and Zimbabwe on 6 November, and the final clash itself a week later.

England and New Zealand have a pretty healthy Net Run Rate of +4.450 and +0.239 respectively. Considering the points, there’s barely any difference between the 6 teams. New Zealand, England, Australia, and Ireland sit on 3 points each while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have earned 2 points each so far.

After today’s England vs Australia washout, England would be the happier of the two teams with the points shared because Australia is the side that needs to make up ground. England is ahead of Australia on net run rate  0.239 to -1.555. England is also sitting on the second point on the table with three points while Australia is currently on fourth place with three points.
