The preliminary qualifying round of the T20 World Cup concluded on Friday with 4 teams out of 8 in the round progressing through to the next round: Super 12.
Sri Lanka and the Netherlands from Group A, which also included Namibia and the UAE, and Zimbabwe and Ireland from Group B, which also included Scotland and West Indies, qualified for the Super 12 round that kicks off on Saturday. The qualifying round was very competitive – with these 4 teams having 4 points each while the 4 eliminated teams having 2 points – and it further made a case for the main T20 WC round to be expanded from the next tournament in 2024.
In the Super 12 round, teams are divided into two groups of 6 each, with the top two from each group proceeding to the semi-final. The two semi-finals will be played in Sydney and Adelaide, with the final slated for MCG on November 13.
As far as the Super 12 Groups are concerned – Sri Lanka and Ireland moved into Group 1, which has England, New Zealand, Australia and Afghanistan; Netherlands and Zimbabwe are placed into Group 2 along with India, Pakistan, South Africa, and Bangladesh.
