The T20 World Cup 2022 is less than a month away, and all the players and fans are excited for the 8th edition of the competition, which will be held in Australia from October 16 to November 13.
Similar to last year, the tournament will start with a preliminary qualifying round where 8 teams will compete for 4 spots in the Super 12 round, which will kick off on October 22. The final will be played at the MCG, with Sydney and Adelaide hosting the two semifinals.
This T20 World Cup 2022 is expected to be the last for a number of high-profile international stars, who may either retire from all forms of the game or from the shortest format after this event.
Here are 3 records which the mentioned superstars of the game will eye at the T20 World Cup 2022:
1. Most runs in T20 World Cup history – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, David Warner
Former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for most runs in T20 World Cups- 1016 that he scored in 31 innings at an average of 39. With 965 runs at 34, Chris Gayle (who, although not retired, is not in West Indies’ squad) is second, while T Dilshan with 897 runs is third.
Following them is the Indian pair of Rohit Sharma (847 runs in 30 innings at 38) and Virat Kohli (845 runs in only 19 innings at a staggering average of 76!). Australian opener David Warner, who will be playing in home conditions, has amassed 762 runs in 30 innings is behind Rohit and Kohli.
All three of them are likely playing their last T20 World Cup and will be aiming to hunt down Jayawardene’s record.
2. Most fours – Sharma, Warner, Kohli, Guptill
Once again Mahela Jayawardene leads this list of most fours in T20 WC’s with 111 fours to his name, while Dilshan has 101. And once again Rohit Sharma (80 fours), David Warner (80 fours) and Virat Kohli (78) are chasing the Sri Lankan’s record. New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, who has 61 fours, is too far behind Jayawardene’s tally.
3. Most wickets in T20 World Cup history – Shakib
Bowlers will find plenty of assistance in the Australian conditions – pace, bounce and the big grounds – and this would make Shakib Al Hasan feel good about his chances of extending his record at the T20 World Cup and eye the landmark figure of 50 wickets!
The Bangladeshi skipper has so far taken 41 wickets – the most in T20 World Cup history. Behind him are the retired legends – Shahid Afridi (39 wickets), Malinga (38 wickets) and Saeed Ajmal (36 wickets).
Among the players who will be at this year’s T20 World Cup, India’s R Ashwin with 26 wickets is the closest to Shakib. So unless Ashwin produces miraculous performances by taking a truckload of wickets every game, Shakib will continue with his record. Behind Ashwin is Australia’s Mitchell Starc with 24 scalps in the tournament’s history.
