ICC Champions Trophy 2017: India’s swashbuckling opener Rohit Sharma is likely to be named India’s vice captain for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. A source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed to the Deccan Chronicle that although no one has officially been appointed as Virat Kohli’s deputy, but is almost certain that Rohit Sharma will be given this responsibility.

“The selectors have not announced the name of the vice-captain. However, among themselves, they have already chosen one, but will be announced only if required in an emergency,” the source was quoted saying.

Most recently in the last test of the India – Australia series, Ajinkya Rahane was seen fulfilling role after Virat Kohli was out with a shoulder injury. Rahane also led India to victory in the fourth Test of the series against Australia, but BCCI are impressed with Rohit’s captaincy skills and they want him to take up this responsibility.

Rohit has been leading Mumbai Indians brilliantly in IPL from the time he was appointed their captain. In IPL 2017, Rohit led Mumbai brilliantly and now they are the only team to win IPL thrice. Considering his brilliant leadership skills, it is a good decision on BCCI’s part to make him Virat Kohli’s deputy, ahead of Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin, who don’t have too much captaincy experience.

The ICC Champions Trophy will begin on 1 June 2017. India will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on 4 June 2017.
