Gautam Gambhir will play in the third Test, says Virat Kohli

Gautam Gambhir’s comeback was celebrated by Indian cricket fans and they were all excited to see the southpaw in Indian colours after a couple of years. However, Gautam Gambhir was made to sit on the bench and Shikhar Dhawan replaced KL Rahul in the playing XI at the top of the order.

But, unfortunately for Dhawan, he couldn’t score runs and got injured after the game. Now, this has opened the gates for Gambhir, who will play Test cricket after 2 long years. Gautam Gambhir last played Test cricket for India in 2014 in England.

India’s Test skipper Virat Kohli said in an interview that Gambhir will be included in the playing XI.

Can we assume that Gautam Gambhir will open the innings?
Yes, that’s the natural change because of Shikhar Dhawan’s injury. That is a natural replacement in the team because he is the third opener.

This will be a big opportunity for Gautam Gambhir to make a mark once again and send out a strong signal for fans and selectors that he still has a lot of cricket left in him. Gambhir, 34, will be up for the challenge and he will have at the back of the mind that this might be his final shot at redemption. Shikhar Dhawan has just one half-century in the last 16 innings and he seems to be hanging by the thread. In such a scenario, Gambhir may fill in as a stop-gap arrangement till India bloods more openers.
