Social meda spared no one. Not even the World Cup-winning and multiple times IPL winning skipper MS Dhoni, the man who has drawn perhaps the most polarizing reactions by fans across his career.
On Sunday, once again, MS Dhoni was trolled heavily on social media for his slow innings, something that had attracted heavy criticism during his playing days for India and previously as CSK captain.
In a massive run chase of 181 against Punjab Kings, CSK had been reduced to 36/5 inside 8 overs and a third consecutive victory for the defending champions seemed inevitable – that despite the fact that one of the greatest finishers ever, MSD, was still at the crease.
It was, in fact, Shivam Dube who launched a counter-attack with his 30-ball 57 keeping CSK alive in the game while Dhoni dotted up deliveries, piling up the pressure more on Dube.
While the left-hander was hammering Kagiso Rabada for sixes, Dhoni was batting at a strike rate close to 50!! Dube then eventually got out after his half-century as there was no support – in terms of runs, if not suggestions and advice – from the other end.
The wicket of Dube was followed by those of Dwayne Bravo and Dwaine Pretorius. With 74 required off 4 overs – an improbable task even for Dhoni at his peak – Dhoni broke his shackles to slog a six and a four; well, the crowd did enjoy that. But the agony of hardcore Dhoni and CSK supporters was soon ended when the former skipper was dismissed the next over; his score: 23 off 28 balls in a run chase of 181.
Again – this is not the first time that MS has played such an innings. That is what irked the fans even more that they Dhoni refused to accept he isn’t the same Dhoni of yore who’d take the game deep by settling himself in first. But- that’s Dhoni for you. He comes as a full package.
As CSK slumped to their third defeat – already their worst ever star in an IPL season -netizens plundered with memes trolling the iconic former India and CSK captain, MS Dhoni.
Here are some of the best reactions to Dhoni’s go-slow knock:
