It is none other than the greatest finisher MS Dhoni who holds the record for the most runs in the 20th over in the IPL history.
Hailed as the GOAT finisher in white-ball cricket, the Chennai Super Kings captain, MS Dhoni, has scored 655 runs in the 20th over alone in the IPL at a belligerent strike rate of 243.
This feat includes completing several run-chases, where the bowling team bowls their best bowler in the penultimate over, that is the 19th, against whom Dhoni remains a bit cautious of not giving away his wicket before taking down the weaker bowler in the 20th over of the run-chase with his extraordinary confidence and brute power-hitting.
MS Dhoni has smashed 52 sixes and 48 fours in the 20th over in IPL

In his IPL career, MSD has faced bowlers in the 20th over of the innings on 86 occasions and has been dismissed only 24 times – this is quite a terrific record, because more often than not batters get out while trying to hit big sixes. But Dhoni, as this stat says, is dismissed once in every 3.5 innings in the 20th over. That is, to say the least, simply astonishing from the Ranchi-born finisher.
It is also staggering that he’s hit 52 sixes in the 20th over while taking 57 singles, running 44 twos, and stroking 48 fours. His strike rate in the last over of a complete innings in the IPL is 243.
Behind MSD, on this list, is Mumbai Indians’ Kieron Pollard, who has scored 405 runs in the 20th over in the IPL at a strike rate of 214. This further puts Mahi’s record in context and makes it even more pronounced.
Overall, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has scored 4878 runs in his IPL career in 228 matches.
IPL 2023 to be the last for MS Dhoni?
Meanwhile, turning to IPL 2023, it is all but certain to be the last IPL season for Dhoni as CSK’s captain and player. The 41-year-old had stated last year that he’d like to play one more time in front of the home crowd in Chennai and will be the perfect farewell in that sense.
CSK will kick-start their IPL 2023 campaign in the tournament opener on 31 March against defending champions Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
