It is fair to say that not just Gautam Gambhir, but most people watching this incident were left very much surprised when hawkeye overturned the on-field umpire’s decision of ‘OUT’, giving a reprieve to Anmolpreet Singh off Yash Thakur’s bowling when SRH and LSG met at the Ekana stadium on Friday, April 7th.
The SRH-LSG game was played on a black soil pitch that was slow and low and offered sharp turn. Pacer Yash Thakur, who was impressive on his debut match vs CSK, was given the ball in the 6th over of LSG’s innings, after Krunal Pandya had dismissed SRH opener Mayank Agarwal.
Yash Thakur then, in his first over, had the other SRH opener, Anmolpreet Singh, after the on-field umpire gave the batter out. Realizing the slow and low nature of the pitch, Yash rolled his fingers over the ball and put it on just short of length in line with the stumps.
Seeing it as a short ball, Anmolpreet Singh went for the pull, which was the right stroke for that length on most pitches, but not on this surface. The ball kept much low than the batter anticipated and his him on his leg, above the pads. Yash and other LSG fielders went up in the appeal of LBW which the on-field umpire gave out.
However, upon reviewing, a DRS taken by Anmolpreet, the HawkEye showed that the ball was, and to everyone’s surprise, going over the stumps. MISSING, flashed on the screen in green, giving the green signal to Anmolpreet to continue his innings.
The LSG players were left shocked and so was their mentor, Gautam Gambhir. The camera was also quick to pan to Gautam Gambhir, sitting in the dugout, to catch his reaction. And Gautam Gambhir’s reaction told it all – about the shock that the HawkEye showed the ball to be going over the stumps, which in this case, on this pitch, seemed highly unlikely.
A stunned Gautam Gambhir looked toward the analyst and other coaching staff members in utter disbelief
