After Kumble-Kohli Fiasco, CAC Makes A Big Decision

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) comprising of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman has decided to not consult the Indian captain Virat Kohli before appointing the new Indian coach.

Last year, CAC picked Anil Kumble over Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody, and their decision turned out to be a good one as Indian cricket team made progress under Kumble in all three formats of the game. However, under pressure from Virat Kohli and other Indian cricketers who had reservations with his style, Kumble resigned from his job.

Reportedly, Virat Kohli played a big role in this as he wasn’t willing to continue as Indian captain under Anil Kumble. He made it clear to CAC that if they decide to continue with Anil Kumble, he will resign as Indian captain. Kumble was offered an extension till the Caribbean tour starting June 23 but he refused to accept it and gave his resignation.

After Kumble-Kohli Fiasco, CAC Makes A Big Decision

According to India Express, A BCCI spokesperson revealed that CAC will not consult the team or captain while selecting the next coach.

“They have made it clear that while choosing the next coach, they may not consult the team or captain,” a BCCI spokesperson was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“They have made their views clear. Let’s see how to go about it,” he added.

OUR TAKE: This decision has been taken keeping in mind that it is very important to give next coach the freedom and authority he needs in the dressing room. If Kohli is involved in the process and the man of his choice isn’t picked, it can lead to another ugly scenario in the dressing room. This is a very good decision by CAC because only a healthy relationship between captain and coach can take Indian cricket forward. After Kumble-Kohli fiasco, it is CAC’s duty that they make sure no such thing happens in future.
