According to a report in The Hindustan Times, the Ranchi-born cricketer didn’t do so voluntarily, but was asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While many believe that the conversation between MSK Prasad and MS Dhoni could have led to Dhoni stepping down as captain, the report added that the process began in Septemeber last year, soon after the new selection committeewas formed.

According to the same The Hindustan Times report, a source close to BCCI said that it was conveyed to MS Dhoni that selectors wanted to take over captaincy, keeping the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in mind.
