MS Dhoni

ViThe 2019 IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur saw one of the rarest sights in the world: MS Dhoni not just showing his anger, but also going toe-to-toe with the on-field umpire’s for a no-ball call.

MS Dhoni is a man who rarely shows his emotions. So this outburst from the CSK skipper MS Dhoni – who stormed in the middle of the ground from the dugout! – stunned the entire cricketing world. When ‘Captain Cool’ lost his coolness and showed his rarely seen sight of anger and frustrations.

In the 25th match of the IPL 2019 season, as the CSK-RR match went down the wire in the last over of a run chase, Ben Stokes bowled a waist-height no-ball, which was initially signaled by the on-field umpire, but soon after the umpire retracted his call because the leg side umpire didn’t make the no-ball signal.

Jadeja was at the crease and looked befuddled by this decision of the umpire. Chaos broke when MS Dhoni, who had been first gesturing from near the crease, stepped into the playing field and stormed angrily toward the umpires. A long conversation took place in the middle between the two umpires, MS Dhoni, Jadeja, Stokes, Steve Smith and Rahane, with the CSK skipper furiously speaking with the two umps.

Eventually, as MS Dhoni left the field, the umpires continued with a legal delivery, although CSK later went on to win the match courtesy of a six from Santner. This incident created huge clatter among the fans and commentators.

MS Dhoni was fined only 50 percent of his match fees for arguing with the umpire,

Former India opener Virender Sehwag reckoned Dhoni got away with a very light penalty and should have been banned for 2-3 matches.

Speaking with Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag said, “I feel Dhoni was let off easy and should have been banned for at least two or three games. Because if he did this, tomorrow another captain can do the same. Then what is the value of an umpire? Dhoni’s presence on the field was unnecessary, as two CSK members were already present and equally curious about the no-ball situation.”
