Ravichandran Ashwin Responds To Trolls About Not Wishing MS Dhoni On Twitter

Ravichandran Ashwin Responds To Trolls About Not Wishing MS Dhoni On Twitter: In the hyper-connected world of social media, even the smallest of actions, or inactions, can spark intense reactions. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently found himself in the crosshairs of Internet trolls on MS Dhoni’s 42nd birthday. Despite his other posts of the day, the absence of a birthday greeting for the former Indian skipper did not go unnoticed by fans.

As a result, he was propelled into making a public birthday wish for Dhoni, acknowledging that not doing so could lead to a “catastrophic” response from netizens. Dhoni, one of India’s most celebrated cricketing figures, has an enormous fanbase that is particularly active on social media platforms. In light of this, Ashwin noted humorously that this would be the last time he would make such a public gesture.

Interestingly, Ashwin had sent out a couple of tweets earlier that day. One was a reaction to Tamim Iqbal’s retirement reversal, and the other praised Ben Stokes’ phenomenal knock in the Ashes. However, some fans were unhappy that Ashwin had not wished Dhoni on his birthday and began trolling the off-spinner.

Evidently irked by the trolling, Ashwin clarified that he prefers to wish people directly. He further added a disclaimer for the “gossip mongers” and “story spinners”, emphasizing that this tweet would be his last public birthday wish for anyone. Instead, he stated that he would prefer to wish people directly or call them.

Tweeting on July 7th without wishing the great man a happy birthday can prove to be catastrophic. 😂😂Happy birthday Mahi bhai. #disclaimer this will be my last birthday wish on Twitter for anyone. I believe I will stick to wishing them directly or call them.

The disclaimer…

Interestingly, Ashwin was not the only cricketer to face this sort of social media backlash on Dhoni’s birthday. Former cricketer and current pundit, Harbhajan Singh, also fell prey to trolls. Despite sending out tweets earlier in the day, Harbhajan was met with comments criticising him for not wishing Dhoni. Eventually, Harbhajan too succumbed to the pressure and wished Dhoni later.

In conclusion, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the power of social media and fan expectations in today’s digital age. Despite their skill on the cricket field, players like Ashwin and Harbhajan must navigate the tricky terrain of online interactions and fan expectations. While the incident was minor, it underscores the influence of star athletes like Dhoni, whose fans will not hesitate to voice their dissatisfaction if their favourite players are perceived to be slighted. Ultimately, it seems that in the age of social media, cricketers are playing a whole new game off the field.
