Ishan Kishan got to make his Test debut for India in the first Test against the West Indies that got kick-started Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at Windsor Park in Dominica. India are playing in Dominica after 12 years.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat first in the first Test. Both the teams have some debutants. For India, wicket-keeper Kishan and left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal are playing their first career Test match while for the hosts, talented spinner Jomel Warrican was given his Test cap.

Rohit Sharma had confirmed a day ago that Jaiswal will make his Test debut and Shubman Gill will shift to number 3. The news of the debut of Kishan was confirmed just ahead of the match.

Ishan Kishan replaces KS Bharat as the wicket-keeper.

KS Bharat made his debut earlier this year over Kishan earlier this year against Australia at home as Rishabh Pant was unavailable due to injuries suffered in a car accident. Bharat played 4 Tests at home vs Australia and then in the WTC Final 2023 against the same opposition; in 5 Tests, Bharat scored 129 runs at an average of 18 with a best of 44.

With an ordinary start to his Test career, Bharat was dropped and Kishan was handed his debut Test cap in West Indies.

Both KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan have got opportunities in Test cricket as Rishabh Pant is injured.

Renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle took to Twitter to point out that Kishan has gotten a bit lucky with Pant’s absence and Kishan should make his chance count.

“Huge day in your life when you get a test cap. I think India have got the order right with Jaiswal at the top and Gill at a number I hope he makes his own. The cards have fallen in place for Ishan Kishan and, talented as he is, he will realise this is a lucky turn of events and he must make the most of it,” Harsha Bhogle tweeted.
