Veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has been a revelation as a commentator since last year, adding a breath of fresh air, his witty repertoire, and his experience of playing cricket in the past years into a commentary group that largely consists of ex-cricketers who retired much before Karthik.
Dinesh Karthik was involved in a hilarious banter with former Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Mark Taylor during their commentary stint on Day 4 of the ongoing 5th and final Ashes 2023 Test at The Oval, which ended with Taylor teasing Karthik about getting an Honorary English citizenship while Ponting trolling him for wanting to extend his commentary contract.
Day 4 of the Oval Test ended with Australia turning back to the tables on England with a terrific unbeaten 135 runs opening stand between David Warner and Usman Khawaja in their chase of 384 runs.
With this unexpected long opening stand, Australia now stand 249 more runs away from taking the series 3-1, which they currently lead 2-1. Should the match end in an Australian win, or even a draw as there is rain threat, Australia would win their first Ashes series in England since 2001.
With this prospect following a big opening stand, Dinesh Karthik decided to show Ponting and Mark Taylor one similar incident from the 2009 Ashes series. In the final Test of the 2009 Ashes in England, with the series leveled at 1-1, Ponting and Mike Hussey had forged a big partnership of 127 runs before Ponting got run out courtesy of an accurate direct hit from Flintoff. This run-out changed the game and England won the match, and the Ashes series.

“The two Australian commentators here going gaga over how well Australia are going. Here is a moment though, that happened a few Ashes ago. Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey had put on a partnership of 127 before this happened. What happened after that, I think it is best Ricky explains. They lost the Test and the Ashes post that,” said Karthik, drawing loud laughter from the commentary box.
Laughingly, Ponting and Taylor too retorted back with funny jibes against Dinesh Karthik.
“Gee have a bit of that, there you go. Dinesh Karthik’s become an honorary Englishman overnight hasn’t he?” said Taylor. “Just making sure he has a contract next year, isn’t he? Locking himself in in the Sky box. Good work DK,” Ponting then said.
