Graeme Smith, a cricketing prodigy, wore the captain’s hat at just 22 in 2003. His leadership spanned a remarkable decade. Ray Jennings, on the other hand, took the coaching reins briefly in 2004-05. On the surface, one might expect synergy between such talents. But, reality narrated a different story.
Their discord became public knowledge when de Villiers candidly spoke about it. The conversation began innocuously. AB was discussing Andy Flower’s recent appointment as the Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach. The chat took a nostalgic turn when he mentioned Flower’s excitement to collaborate with Bangalore’s skipper, Faf du Plessis.

Interestingly, the duo, Flower and du Plessis, shared past successes. They previously paired up for St Lucia Kings in the CPL 2021. Their camaraderie steered the team to the finals. Reflecting on this, de Villiers emphasized the vitality of a harmonious captain-coach relationship. He believes mutual trust between these pillars cascades positivity throughout the squad.
Recalling his playing days, AB delved into the Smith-Jennings saga. On his YouTube channel, de Villiers noted, “I saw Flower’s enthusiasm about joining forces with Faf. Such rapport between a coach and captain positively impacts the team. Players need to sense this unity.” He then recounted the contrasting vibes he experienced earlier.
“During my early career, Smith’s captaincy saw a peculiar dynamic with coach Jennings. They barely communicated. When they did, it was often confrontational,” de Villiers recollected. “This unique setup didn’t majorly disrupt the team’s spirit. We players engaged more with Smith.”
However, de Villiers also highlighted a crucial aspect. Despite the captain-coach discord, he admired Jennings’ coaching style. But in the team’s microcosm, Smith was the more approachable figure. Jennings’ aloofness, coupled with his disagreements with Smith, crafted an “interesting” dynamic.
Yet, irrespective of their personal differences, Smith’s track record speaks volumes about his leadership prowess. He owns the enviable record of the highest Test wins as captain. Out of 109 games helmed by him, South Africa emerged victorious in 53, while facing defeat in 29.

AB de Villiers said: “I saw Andy Flower actually posting about wanting to work with Faf and being very excited to work with him. It’s always a good thing. When the coach and captain work really well together, it feeds off into the team. It’s really important for the players to feel the trust, feel that the captain and the coach are on the same ship, heading in the same direction.”
He continued: “I’ve played in teams before … Ray Jennings, when Graeme Smith used to be captain, the two of them they literally didn’t speak to each other. When they did, they were fighting. It was really interesting. I won’t say it really affected the team. We sort of interacted more with Graeme. Even though I had enjoyed Ray’s approach of coaching so much, Graeme was part of the boys and in the team. But the two of them didn’t talk, and it was a very interesting dynamic back in the day.”
