Kapil Dev Has Sent A Stern Warning To Team India Ahead Of Asia Cup 2023

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has expressed his concern regarding the players who are returning from injuries and are included in the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. While many experts saw the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer as an unrealistic burden, however, Kapil Dev feels their inclusion is justified as it may evade the chance of a future setback.

It has to be noted that the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 will serve as a key for the preparations of the bigger tournament – ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place in India in October. Thus, Asia Cup 2023 is a huge opportunity for the players to get into the rhythm.

Since the full-strength team is expected to make it for the World Cup, thus, the Asia Cup will also provide clarity on whether the returning players can handle the pressure. KL Rahul, who is returning from a thigh injury, is expected to feature at some part in the tournament. According to Kapil Dev, it is important for the player to get some match practice.

Recently, while interacting with the media, Kapil Dev expressed his concern on how important it is for all the players to get accustomed to challenges before the World Cup 2023. He also said that match practice before the World Cup could determine the fitness of the players. He said:

Ideally every player should be tested out. The World Cup is so close but you still haven’t given the players a chance? What if they head to the World Cup and then get injured? The entire team will suffer. Here, at least they will get a chance to bat or bowl a little and get some rhythm going.”

He added:  “Worst case scenario, if the guys get injured again during the World Cup, it will be unfair to the players who will miss out on being part of the squad.”

“The injured players who have returned need to be given a chance. If they are fit, then can play the World Cup,”

Kapil Dev’s main concern is regarding the returning players, and whether their bodies will be able to withstand the demands of the marquee tournament slated to take place later this year. He said:

“There is no shortage of talent, but if they are not fit, India will have a chance to make changes to the World Cup squad right away. You have a wonderful opportunity to create a team for the World Cup and the Asia Cup is a fine platform. I want these players to go and express themselves. But if there is any sort of question mark, they don’t need to be around.”

He added:

“If you do not give them a chance, it will be unfair to not just the players but also the selectors. I am aware that the World Cup is taking place in India but you need to pick the best and fittest team,”
