Asia Cup 2023: Sourav Ganguly Has Important Advice For Team India Ahead Of IND vs PAK

Asia Cup 2023: When it comes to cricket, few rivalries match the intensity of India versus Pakistan. The two cricketing giants share a unique dynamic, defined not just by sport but also political history, cultural ties, and shared passions. In a recent interview on Revsportz’ show “Backstage with Boria,” former India captain Sourav Ganguly pulled no punches. He emphasized the enormity of an India-Pakistan game, equating its importance to high-profile contests like India-Australia or India-South Africa.

Ganguly, who has seen his fair share of Indo-Pak clashes, offered a pragmatic viewpoint. He asserted that the hype should never overpower the players. Instead, he advised treating it like any other high-stakes match. The idea isn’t to downplay the importance of the contest; rather, it’s a coping mechanism to manage the colossal pressure that comes with it.

Interestingly, the 51-year-old also pointed out a shift in the dynamic. He referenced Pakistan’s win against India last year in Dubai, suggesting that the tides might be turning. Nonetheless, Ganguly affirmed that India holds the upper hand, especially when it comes to World Cup matches. After all, statistics don’t lie: India has a flawless World Cup record against Pakistan.

However, records are just numbers until proven on the field. Ganguly emphasized that despite being favorites, India needs to bring their A-game. He praised India’s bowling unit, a lethal combination of fast and spin bowlers, as a key factor. But the veteran also warned that the outcome would depend on the team’s execution on the day of the match.

So, what makes these clashes so special? It’s not just about the talent on display or the nationalistic fervor that grips both nations. It’s about the underlying emotions, the raw energy of the crowd, and the personal milestones that often come to define a player’s career. Imagine the electrifying atmosphere when the arch-rivals face off in the Asia Cup on September 2nd in Pallekele, and later, in the World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The stakes are incredibly high, and the world will be watching.

Moreover, Ganguly highlighted that playing in Ahmedabad, in front of a full house, will add another layer of complexity for Pakistan. The pressure of a roaring Indian crowd can act as a double-edged sword: a morale booster for India and an intimidation factor for Pakistan.

What makes the upcoming matches even more intriguing is their timing. With the Asia Cup encounter serving as a sort of prelude, the teams have a chance to size each other up before their World Cup clash. If they meet in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup as well, that adds another fascinating chapter to this enduring rivalry.

As Ganguly rightly pointed out, the games are huge, always were, and always will be. And while the players might say it’s “just another game” to cope with the pressure, we all know it’s much more than that. The upcoming contests are not just battles between bat and ball; they’re about legacy, pride, and, most importantly, the joy that only a game like cricket can bring to millions of fans.

Ganguly said: “It is a huge game. Always was and always will be. You have realized how important it is in the context of the World Cup.” The former BCCI chief went on to add, “I used to treat it very much like an India-Australia, India-South Africa contest. You can’t let the occasion get to you because that’s when you tend to lose focus.”

“No its not [just another game]. You have to prepare yourself that way. That’s how you manage pressure. In my tenure we had a great record against Pakistan but this time round it will be a more competitive game. Last year after Pakistan beat India in Dubai things have changed,” he said.

Sourav Ganguly added: “India are the favorites and there is no doubt about that. India also has the record against Pakistan in World Cup 50 over contests. But you have to play well on the day. India has some very good fast bowlers, and some fine spinners so it will depend on execution on the day.”

So, as we inch closer to these epic showdowns, let’s not forget Ganguly’s wisdom: to be at their best, players need to treat these matches as they would any other high-profile game. Easier said than done, but if there’s one thing we can be sure of, it’s that these matches will be anything but ordinary.
