One of the most memorable banters took place during the Indian Premier League’s season of 2017 when Kevin Pietersen had retired and moved to the commentary box. The duo shared a light exchange during the 2017 IPL in which Dhoni was playing for the Rising Pune Supergiant.
Pietersen told the mic’d up Manoj Tiwary that he was a better golfer compared to Dhoni. KP also urged Tiwary to tell Dhoni that he said so, to which the CSK captain replied with a hilarious dig of his own. “You are still my first Test wicket,” he told Pietersen through the mic.
The banter is clearly light-hearted with Pietersen expressing his admiration for Dhoni a number of times over the years.

In 2020, Kevin Pietersen started another banter where he shared a throwback picture with former Indian captain MS Dhoni. In the picture, KP can be seen suggesting something to Dhoni. Sharing the picture, KP wrote:
“Hey, MSD, why don’t you put a fielder over there for me? Scoring runs against you guys is so easy,”
The Tweet soon caught the attention of MS Dhoni’s IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, who came up with a hilarious response to KP’s tweet. CSK posted a classic photo, showing off Dhoni’s lightning-fast stumping abilities and trolling back the former England international. CSK replied:
“But sometimes you don’t need fielders!”,
