Mohammad Rizwan (86 not out) and Iftikhar Ahmed (47) put up a stellar 108-run stand to cheer Pakistan to a commanding 252 runs for 7 after rain impacted the game. However, Kusal Mendis (91) led a valiant batting display alongside Charith Asalanka (49 not out) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (48) as Sri Lanka successfully reached the target in 42 overs.
Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique (52 off 69 balls) and Babar Azam (29) put up a 64-run stand. Dunith Wellalage was the man who broke the partnership and gave a crucial breakthrough to his team. However, Rizwan and Iftikhar provided the final flourish, taking Pakistan across the 250-run mark. Rizwan scored 86 runs off 73 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes, while Iftikhar Ahmed smashed 47 runs off 40 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes. For Sri Lanka, Matheesha Pathirana (3/64) was the most successful bowler.
With the defeat, the Pakistan cricket team has been thrashed out of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. On the other hand, Sri Lanka cricket team has qualified for the final showdown, where they will meet the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team.
