Indian captain Rohit Sharma is all set to lead the Indian cricket team in the much-awaited ODI World Cup 2023, which will kickstart tomorrow. Ahead of the marquee tournament, Rohit Sharma has shared his perspective on taking over the captaincy responsibilities of Team India during the later stages of his career.
Rohit Sharma expressed his satisfaction with leading the Indian cricket team in front of a home crowd during the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma commenced his international duties under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Virat Kohli succeeded Dhoni as the captain in all three formats of the game and Rohit became his deputy before he was named as an all-format captain of the Indian team.
Rohit Sharma’s Verdict On Getting Indian Captaincy Late In His Career
Meanwhile, in a conversation with The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma admitted that though taking charge at a younger age would have been an ideal scenario but he insisted that it was fair for him to wait for his turn. He said:
“Obviously, you want to be at your peak for this, say when you are 26-27. But you cannot always get what you want. You are talking about the Indian captaincy and there have been stalwarts in the Indian team.”
He added:
“Many more players deserved to be the captain of the team. I had to wait for my turn and that’s absolutely fair enough. The guys before, Virat was before me, so was MS (Dhoni),”
Rohit Is Expected To Play A Crucial Role In World Cup
Talking about his performances, Rohit Sharma has been in some exceptional form ahead of the marquee tournament. He scored 194 runs in five innings with an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 107.78. He scored four fifties from his last five appearances in international cricket in ODI format.
