- Alex Carey’s haircut has been one of the talking points of the ongoing 3rd Ashes 2023 Test in Headingley.
After the English media ran the story of a barber accusing Alex Carey of owing him £30 for a haircut he had had before the Headingley Test, fire to this was ignited by former England Test captain Alastair Cook, who, while speaking with BBC Test Match Special on day one of Test match, vocalized this rumor further. Alastair Cook said that Alex Carey had promised to pay the barber, but he didn’t return after reaching his hotel.
“[The barber] said, he hasn’t paid,” Cook said. “It was one of those cash-only ones, and he promised he would have a transfer later in the day, and this was just before he shut. This is a true story, I’m not making it up.”

Alastair Cook apologizes to Alex Carey

After clarifications from Steve Smith, that Carey didn’t have a haircut in Leeds, and from a Cricket Australia official who said that Carey hadn’t got a haircut since the WTC Final in London, Alastair Cook was rebuked by fans on social media. This followed an apology from the former England skipper to the Aussie wicket-keeper.
Speaking with TMS, Cook said: “There’s also been a bit of fuss around on a rainy day, a bit of news about a haircut which might have been discussed on radio the other day,” he said. “A case of mistaken identity, so I apologise for the mistaken identity to Alex Carey.”
This rumor was published by UK’s The Sun newspaper which interviewed the barber, Adam Mahmood.
The Sun labeled Carey, the aussies keeper as the “Ashes Villian”, – they are still not over the Bairstow run-out – in their headline. In the article, it was said that he had had a haircut at the Doc Barnet’s Barber Shop in Leeds, and had gone there with teammates Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner, and Usman Khawaja on the eve of the Headingley Test.
Adam said: “They all came in just before we shut.
“We cut their hair and had a great laugh.
“But we don’t accept cards and Alex said he had no cash on him.
“Well, there’s a Tesco cash machine literally round the corner he could have run to.
“He could have nipped back to their hotel and been no more than five minutes but instead he said he would transfer it.
Adam said he’s expecting the money by Monday, when after the Leeds Test ends.
“Maybe he forgot. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt but if it’s not paid by Monday, I won’t be happy.”
