Australian Head Coach Andrew McDonald Is Disappointed With Brendon McCullum For His “No Beer” Comment

Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald was disappointed with England Test team head coach Brendon McCullum for the latter’s statement following Jonny Bairstow’s controversial run-out. Bairstow was dismissed in a controversial manner on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test at the iconic Lord’s Stadium in London and his dismissal has become one of the most talked about topics off-lately.

The game-changing moment took place in the 52nd over of England’s innings as Bairstow and Ben Stokes sought to rebuild after the dismissal of Ben Duckett. Jonny Bairstow assumed that the ball was dead, and started to walk outside the crease. However, displaying remarkable awareness, keeper Carey seized the opportunity and threw the ball directly at the striker’s end, catching Jonny Bairstow well short of his ground.

Meanwhile, after the loss, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum made a bold statement, adding more to the drama, by saying that he can’t imagine sharing a beer anytime soon with the Australian players, the tradition that is being followed for a long time. He also said that the relations between the two sides might not be the same after this incident. He said:

I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon. From our point of view, we’ve got three Test matches to try and land some blows and try and win the Ashes and that’s where our focus will be,” the England red-ball coach said on Sunday.

Andrew McDonald Is Disappointed With McCullum’s Statements

The comments didn’t go down well with many. Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald expressed his disappointment over the comments made by his England counterpart for his comments.

“I haven’t spoken to him. I’ve heard that comment for the first time, and I’m somewhat disappointed by that,” McDonald told reporters on Monday.

He added:

I think there’s a bit of emotion in that, to be honest. It’s very soon after something happens. I’m not one to hold a grudge too much. I’ve been through enough to know you can let things go. But I think to ruin a tradition that’s been so long, such a big series, I think the feelings from a few people will definitely change as the series goes on. Maybe if we weren’t to do what we always do and have a beer together and say well done, great effort and all that kind of stuff it would be sad. But I think that was just emotion,”
